Jörmungandr, also known as the Midgard Serpent or World Serpent, is a colossal sea serpent in Norse mythology. He is one of the children of the trickster god Loki and the giantess Angrboda. Jörmungandr encircles the world of Midgard, and his body is so large that he can grasp his own tail. According to prophecy, Jörmungandr will play a central role in Ragnarök, the end of the world, where he is destined to release his tail, causing immense upheaval and chaos. He is often depicted as a symbol of the encroaching forces of destruction and the cyclical nature of existence in Norse cosmology.
