Hel is a goddess in Norse mythology who rules over the realm of the dead, known as Helheim or simply Hel. She is the daughter of the trickster god Loki and the giantess Angrboda. Hel presides over those who die of illness, old age, or other natural causes, in contrast to the warriors who go to Valhalla. Described as half-living and half-dead, with one side of her body appearing alive and the other decayed, she embodies the duality of life and death. Although not inherently evil, Hel is a grim and somber figure, representing the inevitability of death and the afterlife in Norse belief.
