Hel was the Norse goddess of the underworld and the keeper of the dead who did not fall in battle. She was depicted as a solemn and mysterious figure, often half-living and half-dead—one side of her body vibrant and beautiful, the other pale and decayed. Her presence commanded both awe and fear.

Her attributes included the black cloak, wolves, bones, and the gates of Helheim. As the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda, Hel ruled over the shadowy realm of Helheim, a place where souls journeyed after a natural death.

In Norse art and mythology, she embodied the stillness of the grave and the inevitability of fate. Though not malevolent, Hel represented the quiet, inescapable end that comes for all—respected as a guardian of balance and transition between life and death.
